Listening to Young Children & Person Centred Thinking & Planning in Early Years

Listening to every child is central to the delivery of effective inclusive practice for all young children. This is one of the key principles underpinning the SEND code of practice (2015) and is also embedded throughout the EYFS Framework.

Listening to young children also plays a vital role in enabling children to realise that they can influence the world around them and how they can become competent in sharing their preferences, views, interests, concerns and aspirations. This is true for all children, and we need to begin to offer children the opportunity to express themselves and be listened to at the earliest stages of their life. This professional development event will offer the opportunity to reflect on how we listen and respond to young children and consider how person centred approaches can support this.

Learning Outcomes – participants will know, understand and be able to develop;

  •  Understand the importance of listening and responding to all young children as part of high quality practice.
  •  Consider the various ways in which children express views and choices including the multiple ways children communicate.
  • Gain an overview of person centred thinking and planning.
  • Understand and develop the use of one page profiles to include the voice of the child and parent to support inclusive practice
